The Macarena is a fast participation dance named after the mid-1990's hit song by Los del Rio. The song attained global popularity after the release of the Bayside Boys remix.
The origins of this dance are murky, but the rec.arts.dance Macarena FAQ is a good place to start. As with many synchronized dances, the Macarena is transmitted across dance floors, but can be only mastered after a lot of watching and practice. No wedding or office Christmas party in the 1990's could be thrown without a Macarena moment, complete with amateur dancers along the outer edges looking somewhat foolish while attempting to learn the dance.
